Job Summary:

The Systems Engineer for this MILSATCOM program is responsible for supporting the continued development, integration, and operationalization of a mission-critical mission planning application. This program represents the evolution from prototype to operational capability, requiring engineers who can balance ongoing agile software development with framework integration, operational deployment, and sustainment planning. This role takes a holistic view throughout the system lifecycle, working closely with associate contractors and operational users to ensure successful fielding and sustained operation of the integrated product.

The Systems Engineer serves as the primary technical interface among management, operational users, development teams, and specialty disciplines, ensuring operational requirements are properly understood and addressed while continuing to deliver new capabilities through agile development cycles.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design & Development:

  • Perform systems engineering activities for ongoing capability development through agile software development cycles
  • Support requirements analysis, capture, and management for new operational capabilities identified by user community feedback
  • Develop and maintain system architecture designs that support both new capability development and operational deployment requirements
  • Perform Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) activities including requirements traceability, architecture modeling, and digital engineering artifact generation
  • Provide input to trade studies balancing performance, cost, schedule, and operational risk for system enhancements
  • Ensure system designs maintain compliance with security and operational constraints

Integration, Verification & Validation:

  • Support integration activities between applications and the system framework in operational and test environments
  • Develop and execute verification and validation plans for new capabilities and system updates
  • Support factory-level testing, operational testing, and end-to-end performance simulations
  • Coordinate with test community working groups and reliability evaluation processes
  • Analyze test results, identify discrepancies, and develop corrective action plans
  • Support testing with digital twins, emulators, and simulation environments

Operational Deployment & Transition:

  • Support integration and testing activities in classified environments, coordinating with operational users to validate system performance against mission requirements
  • Participate in operational readiness reviews and support activation of the system in operational facilities
  • Develop and execute operational deployment plans, coordinating with government customers, operational sites, and the system framework integration team
  • Support configuration management and technical baseline control for fielded systems using established change management processes
  • Support closed-loop failure reporting, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation

User Support & Documentation:

  • Engage directly with operational users (military, government civilian, and contractor personnel) to understand operational workflows and capability needs
  • Support development and delivery of Technical Orders (TOs), Training Manuals (TMs), and Software User Manuals (SUMs) in accordance with applicable standards
  • Incorporate operational feedback into system improvement priorities and development backlog
  • Ensure system usability meets requirements for junior-level operators

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field required. Master's degree preferred
  • Experience: 2-10+ years of systems engineering experience supporting DoD programs. Demonstrated experience in both development and operational deployment phases preferred
  • Clearance Requirement: Active DoD Secret clearance required. TS/SCI eligibility preferred
  • Required Technical Skills:
  • Systems Engineering: Strong knowledge of systems engineering principles including requirements development, architecture design, integration, verification, validation, and configuration management
  • SATCOM Operations: Understanding of satellite communications operations, mission planning workflows, and operational procedures. Familiarity with operational military satellite communications systems highly desired
  • Agile Development: Experience working on agile software development teams supporting operational systems, including managing technical debt and prioritizing operational defects alongside new feature development
  • Digital Engineering: Proficiency with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and tools, specifically Cameo Systems Modeler. Experience with digital engineering environments and requirements traceability
  • Technical Documentation: Experience developing or contributing to Technical Orders, operational documentation, or training materials for DoD systems
  • Required Professional Skills:
  • Analytical & Problem-Solving: Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex technical issues in operational contexts, assess trade-offs between development and operational priorities, and develop effective engineering solutions
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to effectively collaborate with operational users, development teams, government customers, and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Multi-tasking: Proven ability to manage concurrent technical assignments across development and operational tracks, prioritize competing demands, and deliver high-quality work while meeting program milestones
  • User-Centric Approach: Ability to translate operational user needs into technical requirements and design solutions that meet mission requirements
  • Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Experience with fielded MILSATCOM terminal control systems and satellite payload configurations
  • Experience with ground system frameworks, DevSecOps pipelines, and cloud-based application development (AWS GovCloud)
  • Knowledge of strategic communications mission systems and associated security requirements
  • Experience with ATO/IATT processes, RMF compliance, and operational cybersecurity requirements for fielded DoD systems
